The first weekend of July at Canyon Lake usually plays out the same way. Trucks and trailers stack up at the ramps by seven. Dry bags come off the shelves at Brookshire Brothers. Someone's neighbor asks whether the water is high enough this year to bother with the boat at all. This summer breaks the pattern in three specific ways, and if you already live here, they're worth mapping before Saturday.
The short version: for the first time in the lake's history, the fireworks will explode over the water instead of over a parking lot. The dining spot that closed at the marina has a name and a hiring sign again. And the ramp math that dictates where you actually launch has quietly narrowed to a handful of options that most weekend visitors still don't understand.
The Liberty on the Lake committee is staging what it calls Canyon Lake's first-ever over-the-water fireworks display, timed to America's 250th Independence Anniversary.
That single fact reorders the July 4 map.
The fireworks are moving offshore
For years, the standard local move was to pick a park, plant a chair, and watch the show launch from land. This year the pyrotechnics go up from a barge, which means the viewing geometry is different. Three no-cost viewing locations are being kept open through the end of the show: North Park at 3210 N Park Rd, Overlook Park at 601 Corps of Engineers Rd, and the Canyon Dam Walkway, all opening at 8:00 AM and staying open through the conclusion of the fireworks, and all noted as good options for guests with sensory sensitivities.
The main event sits at Jacob's Creek Park. The gate there opens at 8:00 AM under standard park entry fees, activities including music, small carnival rides, and beer sales begin at 4:00 PM, and last entry is at 8:45 PM. There's a wrinkle worth knowing at the JBSA Rec Park entry point too. The entry gate closes at 6:00 PM and reopens at 7:30 PM for free fireworks viewing, and no entry is permitted between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM, though guests already inside the park may remain on site during that window. If you're used to rolling up at dusk with a cooler, that ninety-minute lockout will bite.
For boaters, the recommendation is unambiguous. Boat ramp parking is expected to fill early in the day, and once parking areas reach capacity, additional vehicles may be turned away, so boaters are encouraged to launch early and remain on the lake. Which brings us to the second thing that has changed this summer.
The ramp map has narrowed, and it matters
If you've been on the lake for more than a few seasons, you know that "the ramps are open" is not a yes-or-no question. Canyon Lake has 23 boat ramps around its shoreline, most operated by Comal County or the Army Corps of Engineers. On paper. In practice, this June, the marina reported that Boat Ramp #19 is one of only two still open on Canyon Lake. That is a stark contraction, and it explains why the ramps that do work have become the entire summer conversation.

Those numbers come from Getmyboat's Canyon Lake regulations page, which lists Ramp 17 as the only free ramp on the lake at 401 Old Hancock Road, Ramp 18 at a $20 entrance fee for non-Comal County registered vehicles or $5 with a Comal County registration sticker on Canyon Park Road, and Ramp 19 inside the Canyon Lake Marina at $30 per day plus tax. Before you commit to a launch, the smart check is Comal County's Boat Ramp Status public mapping app, which shows current lake level and boat ramp status. It updates. Facebook rumors do not.
The reason this matters beyond the Fourth: with the ramp count that low, the launch you pick on any given Saturday determines your whole day. Old Hancock is free but crowds fast. Canyon Park pays for order. The marina's $30 is what you swallow for convenience when the other two are stacked to the road.
The marina is getting its restaurant back
For most of 2025, the marina had a hole where its restaurant used to be. Canyon Lake Marina teased plans this summer to open a new restaurant that would replace Breakwater Grill & Cantina, which struggled for several years before closing for good in 2025. The new name arrived in June. On social media the marina, located at 280 Marina, announced a new name, Canyon Lake Cantina, and promised "good times" and "great views," and employees declined to provide further information though hiring is underway for the new facility.
A few things worth reading into that. The marina isn't a passive landlord. Boat Ramp #19 is owned and operated by the marina, which features a ship's store, service center, wet slips and dry storage, a boat club, and boat rentals. A functioning restaurant at that address doesn't just add a menu, it stitches a food-and-drink anchor back into a location that already controls one of the few working ramps and most of the slip inventory. If you keep a boat at the marina, the reopening changes what a Sunday afternoon looks like. If you don't, it's still the closest food service to a launch that's actually operating.
Timing is the open question. Hiring signs went up in June and no opening date has been published, so the reasonable expectation is a soft launch during peak season rather than a hard grand opening.
Where locals are actually eating and gathering this month
The lake-adjacent restaurant scene has been in flux for a while, and the reliable list this summer is shorter than the tourist guides suggest. Yelp's June 2026 best-restaurants list for Canyon Lake includes Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Grill, Canyon City Grill, Gennaro's Trattoria, Granny D's, Delia's Paradillas, River Rose Tavern, La Pasadita, Tacos Don Chente, Startz Cafe, and Dam Red Barn. Those are the names that come up when neighbors are the ones asking neighbors.
For live music and holiday weekend plans, the local calendar has more range than a typical July:

And when the crowd thins after the holiday, Overlook Park quietly resumes its role as the most-used everyday amenity on the south side. It's a public day-use park with views of Canyon Lake's south side, a 1-mile loop hiking trail, the Verada Real walking trail that runs across the dam, several unofficial swimming areas reachable through the trails, and overlook points worth a snapshot. Regular hours are weekdays only, so treat the Liberty on the Lake opening as an exception, not the new baseline.
What this summer actually adds up to
Read together, the three changes tell a consistent story. The lake is doing more with less physical footprint. Fewer ramps are open, so the working ones matter more. Fewer restaurants sit directly on the water, so the marina's reboot matters more. The July 4 celebration has fewer land-launch sight lines, so the parks with dam and shoreline views are pulling more of the weight.
